Ceramic bread bin

Ceramic bread bin

Ceramic bread bins have been common in many kitchens for hundreds of years. They were the popular bread bin choice before more modern materials like stainless steel arrived as they could be easily made by potteries.  Ceramic bread bins offer a great choice of bread bin as they are both durable, easy to clean and store the bread safely.  The ceramic bread bin also offers kitchens a great traditional alternative to the more modern bread bins we see today.

The word ceramic comes from the Greek word “κεραμικός” (keramikos), “of pottery” or “for pottery”, from “κέραμος” (keramos), “potter’s clay, tile, pottery” which is said to derive from the Indo-European word *cheros , meaning heat. The earliest mention on the word “ceramic” is the Mycenaean Greek ke-ra-me-we, “workers of ceramics”, written in Linear b syllabic script. Ceramic may be used as an adjective describing a material, product or process; or as a singular noun, or, more commonly, as a plural noun, ceramics.

The earliest ceramics were pottery objects made from clay, either by itself or mixed with other materials, hardened in fire. Later ceramics were glazed and fired to create a colored, smooth surface which many of the ceramic bread bins we see today are manufactured in this process. Ceramics now include domestic, industrial and building products and art objects. This versatile material means that no kitchen is without a ceramic utensil of some kind, however functional you can still do it in style.  Over the last few years there has been an increase in demand for ceramic bread bins in both modern and traditional kitchens as consumers strive to add kitchen accessories that add character and features to the kitchen.

Some of the more common ceramic materials used for bread bins are:

Earthenware is a common ceramic bread bin material, which is used extensively for pottery tableware, bread bins and decorative objects. Although body formulations vary between countries and even between individual makers, a generic composition is 25% ball clay, 28% kaolin, 32% quartz, and 15% feldspar. Earthenware is one of the oldest materials used for making ceramic bread bins. While red earthenware made from red clays is very familiar and recognizable, white and buff colored earthenware clays are also commercially available and commonly used.
Stoneware is another common ceramic bread bin material that is a vitreous or semi-vitreous ceramic ware of fine texture made primarily from non-refractory fire clay.
Porcelain is also a common bread bin ceramic material made by heating raw materials, generally including clay in the form of kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 °C (2,192 °F) and 1,400 °C (2,552 °F). The toughness, strength, and translucence of porcelain arise mainly from the formation of glass and the mineral mullite within the fired body at these high temperatures.

An example of a popular ceramic bread bin is this Charlotte Watson ceramic earthenware bread bin. This bread bin is made in England from an established pottery who make bread bins that compliment both traditional and contemporary kitchen styles. The bread bin comes in a cream colour and it will make a great kitchen bread bin that will be very collectable and will age with time. The bread bin features a solid earthenware lid and has traditional printed font on the bid. One of our most regular best sellers. It is made from a pottery in England that has being making ceramic and earthenware bread bins since 1800.

Mata Ortiz pottery in the gift shop of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum.

According to the Mata Ortiz Art Gallery’s website:

"No two alike, the art in pottery of Mata Ortiz is based on pre-Hispanic designs of the ancient culture of Paquime, delicately drawn freehand on the varied shapes of the modern pots. It’s truly a unique experiment in combining contemporary methods with prehistoric tradition. This custom, lost in time, has grown out of the curiosity and ingenuity of Juan Quezada and others who have perfected the technique to an exceptional level. Mata Ortiz pottery exists in museums and private collections around the world, including the US, Canada, Japan and Europe."

The Japanese Pottery Handbook

51i7bstBGbL. SL160 Shandong Luoyan Black Pottery Workshop Everyone interested in pottery and crafts will find this practical guide a valuable addition to both bookshelf and workshop. Penny Simpson, an English potter living in Japan, and Kanji Sodeoka, her Japanese colleague, have compiled a step-by-step manual of the way pots are made in Japan, their forms, and their decorations. The authors give a thorough account of both traditional and modern techniques and also describe in detail tools, materials, glazes, and the setup of workshops and kilns. Lucy Kitto's lettering and sprightly drawings infuse each page with life and clarity.

Pottery terms and expressions are listed with their Japanese equivalents, making it possible for the Western potter to arrive at a more intimate understanding of Japanese pottery and, when necessary, to communicate with Japanese potters in their own language. A godsend to potters, students, and collectors, this book will be especially welcome to the growing number of potters who come into direct contact with their Japanese counterparts either at home or in Japan.

Irish Pottery Never Fails

Filed Under Ceramics | 25 Comments

Irish Pottery as a gift never fails. From retro Celtic to current modern day Belleek Pottery or the slightly more modern Nicholas Moss Collections. Pottery from Ireland is unique and always appreciated by those who are the lucky recipients of such treasured gifts.

If we take a look at the history of perhaps one of Irish Pottery’s best latter day success stories then we can get an idea of just how the art and craft of the potter has survived in Ireland.

So to Belleek

Pottery in the region began around 1849, after John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited his father’s estate. Seeking to provide employment for his tenants, who had been affected by the Irish potato famine and, being an amateur minerologist, he ordered a geological survey of his land. On finding that the area was rich in minerals, Bloomfield went into partnership with London architect Robert Williams Armstrong and Dublin merchant David McBirney. In setting up a pottery business, Bloomfield managed to get a railway line built to Belleek so that coal could be delivered with which to fire kilns.

Building started on the pottery in 1858. Initially starting with domestic products, it wasn’t until 1863 that small amounts of the Parian porcelain for which Belleek is famous for to this day, was successfully produced. By 1865, the prestige of the company had increased enough that its market included Ireland, England, the United States, Canada and Australia, and clients included the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria and the nobility.

As we have stated, Irish Pottery is always innovative and attractive and is highly representative of its Celtic traditions and roots.
