Electric Pottery Wheels

Filed Under Ceramics | 21 Comments

Pottery and ceramics is a popular arts and crafts activity. A few people choose it as a profession and a percentage of them have become popular designers. Others do clay sculpturing as a leisure activity. In either case, use of a pottery wheel is almost inevitable. This device makes work easier and quick. There are both manual and electric pottery wheels in the markets. Electric styles are modern and they are the best for serious potters. They are very efficient and can get the job done in no time.

On the other hand, manually operated wheels for potters are traditional. They are often the best choices for beginners. In other words, some people still buy them for their children or for themselves. Anyone who hopes to pursue pottery and ceramics earnestly needs efficient equipment. Such a person requires an electric powered wheel. Although an electric wheel does not have a longer life than a kickwheel, it suits anyone’s needs. Note that it can still be useful for ten years or more.

This is enough time for a person to learn and become an expert potter. Most antique items can last for much a longer period than this. Despite that, they are slow and somewhat unreliable for serious commercial uses. As everyone realizes so far, choosing a wheel, based on longevity factor can be challenging. For that reason, one should consider both long-range and short-range goals that he or she has. Another point to think of is ease of use. In this case, it is good to focus on ease of using a machine itself and carrying it around.

Those who will choose electric pottery wheels will not have any reasons to worry. These devices are lightweight and even big ones are on average easy to handle. Portability is a factor that an aspiring future artist should reflect on. This item is not only easy to lift and carry, but also provides no hassle during storage. Having this powerful potter’s wheel is pleasurable and convenient. As a beginner, a person has a lot to know through out the selection and buying procedure.

He or she will come across very intricately built products that demand a bigger storage space. For instance, many electric operated styles have a wheelhead, a motor, a workbench with diverse shapes and sizes, and a frame among other features. This is just but one example of the many available options. Paying more attention to the structure and shape of the wheelhead is important. A typical style looks like a flat disc made of metal with available bat pins. Note that some models lack these different sized pins.

Most beginners need to take enough time researching to understand more about these wheels. Having Internet technology today is a bonus because it facilitates both research and shopping. That is why, looking for articles, blogs, reviews, comments and other useful content is a very wise thing to do. Those who want to go shopping online directly need to choose their vendors wisely. In addition, shoppers can buy used or new electric pottery wheels, but prices are different.

How to Create a Child’s Handprint on Ceramic Tile

Ceramics Class: The advanced students from wheel throw and hand building ceramics classes held an art sale to sell some of their prized works at Cerritos College on last Sunday and those are the leftover that will be on display at the classroom and also on sale today. The works are great and uses non toxic glazes and very light to handle with spoon and forks for dinner plates. I bought two for cereal bowl and soup bowl. I just ate off of one of the bowl.

Your child’s handprint on a tile is a work of art that amazes you in the years to come.  How could their hands ever have been so small?  This is a fun craft to do with a group of moms and their kids. One child per adult works the best.  Each mom will need:
—One soft brush, any size but 1/2″  works the best
—One jar of “One-Stroke  Your child’s handprint on a tile is a work of art that amazes you in the years to come.  How could their hands ever have been so small?  This is a fun craft to do with a group of moms and their kids.underglaze”, either Duncan E-Z Stroke or Gare One-Stroke.  (Of course they can share these, but it’s best if they have at least 3 colors to choose from.  The best are a dark green, a dark blue or a dark brown.  One jar of each color will do 50 hands altogether)
—One pint jar of “clear gloss glaze”, which all can use.
—A sponge
—Paper towels and a washcloth
—One blank UNglazed ceramic tile, 4-1/4″ (for kids 2 or 3 yrs. old or so) or 6″ (for kids over 3) Unless you know someone who does hand-painted tile as a career, these would have to be ordered in cases of 100 or so.  The best thing is to call the hobby ceramic stores, where you will get the underglaze and clear glaze, and ask if they have a “molded greenware or bisque tile they sell”, and order the quantity you need.  Tell them you would like them “fired to bisque.”

The most important thing is that the childrens’ hands are scrubbed with soap and water, then dried well.   Salt, sugar or oils on the hands will prevent the glaze from bonding with the tile.  Make sure to wipe the tile well with a clean sponge in plain water.  Allow to dry a few minutes.

Tell the kids that it is like hand-painting only without wiggling their fingers.  Make it fun, some get scared.  Hold their clean hand gently over a tile to make sure their hand will fit, fingers spread out a little.  Pick the right size tile and paint one wet coat of glaze across the flat of their open palm, not too runny but not too dry, follwing the instructions for mixing on the bottle.  Try to keep their fingers from touching, the more still they keep their hand, the better the clarity.  A good print will show fingerprints!  But if it smears, it usually does, it’s all for fun anyway.  If it starts to become a battle with the child, let him go, when he sees the other kids having a good time he will offer his hand to be painted.  (I say “he” because it is usually the boys that wimp out, the girls are more adventurous. lol)

Make sure the paint goes all the way to the ends of the fingers and thumb and press the hand straight down onto the surface of the tile, quickly but gently and firmly, rolling the fingers slightly so the print doesnt look like skeleton fingers lol.  Lift the hand straight up and see how cool!  Wash their hands with soap, the paint is water soluable and non-staining, but dont let them lick it.  With a fine brush, write the child’s name and date or birthday or age right on the tile.  Set it in a safe place to dry well.

If you are nervous about smearing the dry glaze, have them fired at “cone 04″ before painting the clear gloss on top.  This is the proper way, but if the underglaze is good and dry and you are very careful, it is ok to put the clear glaze on unfired underglaze and fire the tile once at “cone 06″ and the results will be the same.  Either way, get the large floppy brush again and paint 3 thin coats of clear gloss on the tile and fire to “cone 06″.

You can buy frames from most ceramic stores that sell the tiles.  They will last forever.  Have fun!

The picturesque country of Poland is located at the intersection point between the eastern and western sections of the European continent. It was in 2004 that Poland became a member of the European Union. If one studies the culture of the country, it will be seen that as a result of its strategic location and unique history, Poland has been considerably influenced by the cultural nuances of both eastern and western Europe considerably which is reflected in its lifestyle and folklore and also the indigenous artworks. In the different fields of cultural activities, Poland has proved itself time and again in the world arena be it architecture, fine art or literature and even celluloid. Pottery is one of the best known and popular of the various artworks and it is a tradition that has survived the passage of time and today is world famous for its intricate designing forms and quality. It is interesting to note that the origin of stoneware or pottery in Poland has a long and enriched history associated with its growth. It was during the closing years of the 18 th century and the beginning of the 19th century that the earliest specimens of polish pottery may be dated to. In the province of Bunzlau, which was them a part of the German region of Silesia, presently a part of the polish territory, the earliest samples of polish pottery were found and were referred to as Bunzlauer stoneware.

One of the most popular designs of traditional polish pottery known as the ‘eyespot’ design characterized and influenced by peacock feathers originated in this region and was extensively developed by the artists of the time. However, during the period of the Second World War, all these extraordinary works of art were destroyed. But, after the war had subsided, Poland once again continued its tradition of constructing pottery and artwork and factories were also set up for this purpose. Currently, Poland is one of the foremost pottery producers of Europe and the tradition has been kept alive especially in a small village within the polish country known as Boleslawiec. In this region, skilled artisans, inspired by times and trends of ancient and medieval central European folk art, continue to derive pleasure out of forming unique pottery designs. It is interesting to note while the designs remain mostly inspired by traditional art forms, there is no restriction in terms of shape. Polish pottery is available in exquisite designs in multifarious shapes. Polish pottery is displayed in all the major antique shops and museums in Europe .

Collectors of ceramic plates truly enjoy their hobby. They have good reason to. Ceramic plates are beautiful, somewhat easy to accumulate, often very affordable, and if you have a good eye for a bargain, they very often increase in value. Ceramic Plate collectors are an active breed. Many will go so far as to cross multiple state lines to purchase, or sometimes just inspect, a collection or particular piece they are looking to acquire. It is worth the trip too. Some pieces can be worth a nice chunk of change. Some collectors will pay for a particular piece to be shipped internationally just for an appraisal. While this is the exception to the rule, if you‘re a collector of ceramic plates and a key piece for your collection becomes available, it can be worth the effort. If you have ever attended an estate sale held for someone recently deceased, you might notice that some of the items are those held by that individual most, if not all, of their lives.

Some pieces that can be found at an estate sale can be very valuable and available for pennies on the dollar of their market value to other collectors. However, it is not always the monetary value to many collectors. Those who are into collecting ceramic plates just for the money are usually dealers instead of a collector. There is nothing wrong with dealers in and of themselves. It is a legitimate business like any other. Collectors of ceramic plates usually seem to take an affinity to the artwork of the era. Different phases of world history can often be marked by the popular art styles of the time. Speaking of different phases of human history, some collectors enjoy collecting ceramic plates for their historical significance, as their main motivation. A piece that has ever been used at the White House would certainly be welcome in any home.

Some folks enjoy studying the Victorian era and collect their favorite ceramic plates as a way of holding onto something from the era. The mere thought that folks long gone had used a certain piece for dinnerware in their homes can fill some with awe and wonder about the past. Knowing that someone might share some sort of a connection with the past has a definite romance to it. History just has that appeal. Still, others are just quite taken back by ceramic plates in general. They enjoy the decorative look, feel, and heft of a nice set of ceramic plates. They most certainly are excellent dinnerware due to the durable nature of ceramics themselves.

Whatever reasons you have to become a collector of ceramic plates, whether its financial motivation, historic appreciation, or an appreciation of the quality of the artisanship, is a good enough reason for you to enjoy the hobby. You will always look so good when you bring an Italian gifts like some Italian Mosaics, Ceramics bowl, Ceramic Tile, etc; because their beauty is no compared with other Italian Decor, it is very known for their fine figures hand painted, which it make it different than the other kind of ceramics therefore you will have a treasure at home. Villaggio ceramics brings you a lot of items about Italian Ceramics for all those gifts that you want to give in a special day, or some kind of ceramic that you want for your home decorating. You will find beautiful ceramics from Deruta, Maiolica and the best masters from Italy, the best quality and the best ceramic in your hands to U.S.A. from Italy exclusively for the décor of your home.

Marc Chagall Trivia is something that any art buff should brush up on as he is surely one of the more important artists of his generation, and his name is tied to several of the more important movements that occurred within the art world within his lifetime. Starting at his life, you should know that Marc Chagall was born in 1887 and lived until 1985. He came from a Jewish family in Belarus which was a part of the larger empire of Russia when he was born. Chagall is an important figure in art history as well as in the cultural history of the Jewish people, and is considered one of the most important Jewish artists of his time.

Any Marc Chagall quiz could include questions about almost any form of art. Did you know that Chagall worked extensively in painting, illustrating, glass, set design, prints, textile art, and ceramics? He touched many different mediums, which has given him extremely broad appeal both due to the different mediums he worked in and the different stylistic choices that he explored throughout his career.

Marc Chagall trivia could be mostly about the artistic movements that his name was tied to – but the most famous part of art history which is associated with Chagall is the trend of modernism. He is known for being able to unify elements from several previously existing artistic trends such as Cubism and Symbolism in order to help represent the new modernist movement that he was such a vital part of.

Did you know that one of the most famous quotes regarding Chagall was spoken by another of the legendary artists of the twentieth century? Pablo Picasso is quoted as having said that “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is”. The respect born for Chagall, even in his own time, shows how important and influential his work was; including the influence he would have on painters like Picasso.

Did you know that Chagall was as famous for his stained glass work as anything else? He was actually commissioned to create some of the more impressive examples of the form. St. Stephen’s Church in Germany is one of his most famous works, and the only one in Germany, which was significant due to Chagall’s Jewish Heritage.  Another example of this kind of work is the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital in Jerusalem.

Pottery Wheel

Filed Under Ceramics | 27 Comments

Pottery is among the oldest art works. Many cultures from different corners of the planet share this art. It is a process involved in making many kitchen utensils such as porcelain. Up until now, pottery making continues to be popular. Both companies and individuals are now actively involved in this antique practice. It involves the use of a pottery wheel, which has existed for many years. Sizes and shapes of pottery wheels can differ depending on who uses them.

Today, manufacturers of this wheel have made several improvements on it. For instance, they have released electric powered models. One can even find kick wheels. With so many options to go for, everyone can fully enjoy working with clay. When a person is looking to buy any of these ceramics items, he or she must consider a few factors. First, one must determine the user. Note that there are adult and children ceramic wheels available. If mum or dad is interested in clay works, she or he has a perfect choice.

Overall, features of a child’s pottery wheel are many and helpful. Though most of them are made of strong plastic materials, these wheels are strong.

They use an alternating current adapter or batteries to turn the clay. It is up to parents to choose the best source of power, but batteries can be expensive in the end. Special clay type that comes with many children ceramics wheel kit requires zero firing. A child can shape any item on the wheel and leave it to dry on its own. If a person is searching for an adult model, then he or she can expect to have no problems at all. There are plenty of products on the Internet. All one has to do is discovering exactly where to find real wheels for making pottery works successful. If new to all this stuff, a website such as Amazon can be very helpful.

Creating A Theme Or Mood With Pottery

Vintage ashtray now being used as a salt pot!

    This one’s been blogged!

Interior decorating can be challenging. If you are trying to create a certain theme or mood, it may be difficult to find the right items to include in the space. Pottery is an excellent option when you are decorating a room for a holiday, an old time period, or a rural country.

Pottery can create a warm, earthy feeling on Thanksgiving. Using dishes that are actually finished pottery is a wonderful idea. If you don’t want to use the dishes, you can display them in a cabinet with glass doors in the dining room. You can have cups or mugs, plates, tea pots, and platters that are all decorative pottery. The unique and hand-made touch of pottery can make the holiday meal special.

Suppose you own a restaurant, and you want your customers to feel like they are in Africa, Italy, or Japan. There are certain styles of dish pottery were, and still may be, common in these countries. Having pottery of similar deign can create the mood of being in that place of the world. Also, having vases, plant pots, and other pottery items around the dining area can help enhance the theme you are looking to create.

If you want your home to feel like a unique and cozy place, having unglazed pottery pieces for potted plants, vases, ash trays, coasters, and other items can do the trick. If you display small, glazed pottery pieces that are abstract or shaped like something familiar, on a shelf or coffee table, it can truly add some character to the room. If the shape and size of the pottery allows for it, you may even want to hang it on the wall.

Very large pieces of pottery can create a certain mood as well. These are probably more difficult to find. Antique pottery can be expensive as well, especially if it is large and well kept. On the other hand, a pottery item that is scratched or has a small crack might be valuable as well, because that might indicate its very old age.

If you want to be artistic, you may even paint your pottery or add designs to it. Part of using pottery for decorative purposes might include filling it with something like stones, water or flowers. Finishing an unfinished piece of pottery can make it look newer and shinier. This will also help it to last longer.

Be creative and have fun with your pottery.

    Used Pottery Wheels

    Dartington Pottery Training Workshop, 1978
    498545218 6aff26a24b Used Pottery Wheels

in its second year of operation.
Located at the Cider Press, Shinners Bridge, near Totnes, south Devon, England, this was a bold new project sourced by some of Britain’s leading studio potters, the Crafts Council and David Canter. The idea was to take aspiring young potters with or without an art school training, and throw them into the deep end — a real production pottery: the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop. Manager Peter Starkey and his assistant Peter Cook were hired to set it up and run operations. The first two trainees arrived in August 1976.
The project demanded the work ethic expected from apprentices over the centuries: forget the pay, work your butt off and learn what no classroom can teach you. That approach to potters’ training is now all but dead, killed off by well-meaning living-wage laws that have made apprentices too much of a liability to take on.

DPTW apprentices got one week in every five to do their own work. Such was the theory, but constant pressure to meet order deadlines often interfered. Apprentice pay or allowance was 15 pounds a week: a sum that exactly matched happened to be the same as my rent — for a room with bed, stove, and bathroom — in Totnes.

Thanks to Mike Sanderson for kindly sending me this jpg. His website, Ceramike, is a must-see for British potters:
    www.ceramike.com/index.htm

To many people, pottery and ceramics is a business like any other. To others, it is just an art to do during one’s free time. Either perspective is all right. A Pottery wheel is a basic item to have if one wants to be successful in clay works. This old device exists in most countries that popularly manufacture ceramic pieces. Even so, everyone who is now interested in clay art can access the wheels, thanks to Internet evolution. One can go for used pottery wheels or the new models. The latter styles are quite expensive especially if one wants a new age product.

On the other hand, the former are inexpensive and easily accessible over the Internet. Anyone who is on budget right now should select these cheap deals. Despite their low rates, these wheels’ selection can be difficult. Note that a used product has been in another person’s hands before. For that reason, it can be difficult to tell if they have a very good quality or not. This is the reason why every potential shopper must consider the following two issues.

Wheel type – As many know, new wheels have different designs. They come from different sources and that is why they look unique. Used models have similar features, but they suffer a bit of quality depreciation. One can find a big and a smaller sized potter’s wheel. In this case, his or her choice would greatly depend on personal needs. A large style that uses electric power may be very useful for commercial usage.

On the other hand, a small tabletop potters’ style is best for hobbyists or beginners. Note that adults and children ceramics wheels are not the same. If a child has shown some interest in ceramics, his or her parents can buy a specific kit for kids. Portable styles are as well very available and perfect for potters who are always on the move. These are lightweight, easy to use, easy to store, and very reliable.

With any of these models, one can make clay sculptures anywhere they want. Choose among traditional and new age used pottery wheels. The former styles might be cheaper because they are manual. However, one must be ready to work out and feel slightly tired later on. Electric styles are modern and they are quick and dependable. Because of their goodness, these devices can be quite expensive even with their secondhand status.

Rates and quality – There is nothing as disappointing as paying less money for a piece of junk. Anyone who is looking to buy a second hand pottery wheel should pay attention to quality and price. It might help every shopper to read product reviews available on the Internet. Most people who have had prior experience are kind enough to leave a comment or two. In addition, one may find it necessary to start with cheaper small models to facilitate their clay works’ practice. All types of old ceramics equipment that fit beginners and experts exist online and have different rates. Searching and comparing prices for different used pottery wheels is a good advice.
